Outboxx: Blueberry Lemon EP

In a musical landscape increasingly dominated by formulaic reproductions of the same over sanitized sounds, it is raw and organic cuts that often catch the ear.

The latest gear from these brilliant Brighton boys ‘Well Rounded Records’ captures some of that unquantized feel. We’ve been fans of their output for some time and we’re grown accustom to their bass lead sound and fantastically unique artwork.

So when these three tracks from Outboxx popped up in the Disconnected Gmail we got downloading straight away. We knew to expect a more 4×4 approach on this ‘Housing Project’ off shoot, and house we got. Soulful, groovy, and laid back but still maintaining a percussive drive.

Outboxx are Bristolians Jacob Hodge and Matt Lambert who colab with Naomi Jeremy on vocals for one of the tracks. First up is ‘Blueberry Lemon’, a somehow fitting name for this rhythmical, swinging affair which bubbles through to a lovely progression in the latter half of the track, some serious keys going on here. ‘How You Doing’ follows in a similar fashion, but takes us deep down, with a suitably subtle head nodding drop. The beats are slick and the piano is lovely and loose, where’s the terrace at? Finishing things off with a further step into the deepness are the beautiful vocals of ‘Brighten My Day’. More brilliantly lazy synth work provides the perfect off set to Naomi’s words. Top draw stuff… It’s out 25th July… Go get it!
