Miles Maeda: Friend Of Mine

Having already formed a strong groove with its growing band of followers, Back To The Future return with their third release, out on vinyl today and as a digital release in a month – just in time for Christmas!

For this record, reaching across the Atlantic, Back To The Future once again hook up with Miles Maeda who also provides the source material for friends, Brian Heath and Vancouver based Jay Tripwire, to re-work. The package is rounded off by Dudley Strangeways in tandem with newcomer Sam Ryan.

The original from Maeda displays the Chicago resident’s crisp production skills, crafting an airy summer groove above solid drums and no nonsense percussion.

Tripwire’s mix reins in Maeda, taking him on a deep and moody journey. Rigid drums go to work with snippets of the vocal to keep things stepping as he adds tripped out samples to Detroit sounding chords.

On the flip side of the release Brian Heath’s effort adds drops of acid and jacks up the vocal. Creating space with a low slung house groove he expertly twists things as a menacing sub-bass line goes to work.

The last mix of the package from Dudley Strangeways & Sam Ryan rolls in to town cutting up the vocal and letting it ride over tough, jacking drums. Stripping back the vocal and beefing up the drums, this is a muscular, heads down effort.

All four tracks have the classic jacking Chicago rhythms while each cut explores a little more of what makes the Windy City’s house sound. From bump to squelch each track has its own individual route to move the floor making for a great transatlantic interpretation of a tried and tested sound.
